Giants, Seeking 'Spark,' Pull Daniel Jones In Loss To Eagles
New York struggles to generate offense, falls to 0-3 on season
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The New York Giants benched quarterback Daniel Jones in the third quarter of their 22-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, in a desperate attempt to salvage a disastrous start to the 2023 season.
First-Half Struggles
The Giants offense struggled mightily in the first half, with Jones completing just 8 of 13 passes for 84 yards and an interception. The team's only points came via a Graham Gano field goal.
"We're not doing enough to move the ball and score points," said Giants head coach Brian Daboll after the game. "We've got to be better, especially early on."
Jones Benched
With the Giants trailing 14-3 at halftime, Daboll decided to make a change at quarterback. Backup Tyrod Taylor entered the game and immediately led a scoring drive, capped off by a 1-yard pass to Isaiah Hodgins.
"I just wanted to give the team a spark," Daboll said. "Tyrod has been here before and he knows how to win games."
Disappointing Debut
However, Taylor's performance was short-lived. After leading the Giants to a field goal on their next drive, he injured his elbow and had to leave the game. Jones returned to the field, but the offense continued to flounder.
"It's tough to come in and try to make something happen when you haven't been in the game all day," Jones said. "But that's my job and I have to be better."
Looking Ahead
The Giants are now 0-3 this season and face a difficult schedule ahead. They will travel to London next week to face the Green Bay Packers, before hosting the Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens in back-to-back weeks.
"We've got a long way to go," Daboll said. "But we're not going to give up. We're going to learn from this and we're going to get better."
