Iowa Football Coach Kirk Ferentz, Assistant Suspended For 1 Game
In June 2020, former Iowa players accused Doyle of making racially insensitive remarks and using a racial slur towards Black players. The allegations sparked an investigation by the university and the athletics department.
According to the investigation report released by the university, Doyle did use "inappropriate racists language." However, the report did not find that Doyle's behavior created a hostile or discriminatory environment for players.
Ferentz announced the suspension on Wednesday, saying that it was a "difficult but necessary decision." Doyle will miss Iowa's season opener against Purdue on September 4.
Doyle released a written statement expressing regret for his behavior. "I am deeply sorry for the hurt and pain my actions have caused. I have learned from my mistakes and will work hard to earn back the trust of my players, the university, and the Hawkeye faithful."
The suspension is the latest in a series of controversies surrounding Iowa's football program. Ferentz has faced criticism for his handling of the allegations and his decision to retain Doyle despite the investigation findings. The suspension is a step towards addressing the concerns raised by players and fans.
