School Of Rock Oral History: Jack Black, Sarah Silverman, Cast & Crew

Mike White

Fifteen years ago, Jack Black, Sarah Silverman, and a group of talented young actors and musicians came together to create the beloved comedy "School of Rock." The film, about a wannabe rock star who pretends to be a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school, was a critical and commercial success, and it has since become a cult classic. Now, in a new oral history, the cast and crew of "School of Rock" share their memories of making the film.

The idea for "School of Rock" came from screenwriter Mike White, who was inspired by his own experiences as a substitute teacher. White wrote the script with Black in mind for the lead role, and Black was immediately drawn to the project.

"I loved the idea of playing a character who was so passionate about music and who was willing to do whatever it took to get his students excited about it," Black said.

One of the most important aspects of "School of Rock" was the casting of the band. Black wanted to find young actors who could not only play their instruments but who also had the charisma and energy to carry the film.

After a nationwide search, Black and the casting directors found the perfect group of kids. The band included Joey Gaydos Jr. as Zack Mooneyham on guitar, Robert Tsai as Lawrence on keyboards, Caitlin Hale as Patty Di Marco on bass, and Angelo Massagli as Freddy Jones on drums.

The music in "School of Rock" is essential to the film's success. The songs are catchy and fun, and they help to create the film's unique atmosphere.

Black and the band worked closely with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber to create the film's music. Webber wrote several of the songs, including the iconic "School of Rock" anthem.

"Andrew Lloyd Webber is a genius," Black said. "He wrote some of the most memorable songs in the film."

"School of Rock" was filmed over the course of eight weeks in New York City. The cast and crew had a lot of fun making the film, and they developed a close bond.

"We were all so young and full of energy," said Sarah Silverman, who played the role of Patty's mother. "It was a really special time."

"School of Rock" was a huge success when it was released in 2003. The film grossed over $130 million worldwide, and it was nominated for several awards, including two Academy Awards.

The film has also had a lasting impact on popular culture. The "School of Rock" anthem has become a classic, and the film has inspired a Broadway musical and a television series.

"I'm so grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of 'School of Rock,'" Black said. "It's a film that has meant a lot to a lot of people, and I'm proud to have been a part of it."
