Tulane Loses To Memphis On Thanksgiving, College Football Playoff Dream Ends

No. 25 Tulane hosts motivated Memphis in pivotal AAC clash | AP News

New Orleans, LA - Tulane's College Football Playoff dream came to an end on Thursday with a 27-17 loss to Memphis in the American Athletic Conference Championship Game.

Disappointing End to a Stellar Season

The Green Wave entered the game with an 11-1 record and ranked No. 19 in the College Football Playoff rankings. However, they were no match for the Tigers, who dominated the line of scrimmage and forced four Tulane turnovers.

Tigers Dominate Defense

Memphis' defense held Tulane to just 77 rushing yards and sacked quarterback Michael Pratt six times. Linebacker Xavier Carter led the Tigers with 12 tackles and two sacks.

"Our defense played lights out today," said Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield. "We knew we had to pressure Pratt and stop their running game, and we did a great job of both."

Missed Opportunities for Tulane

Tulane had several chances to get back in the game, but they failed to capitalize on critical opportunities. The Green Wave missed two field goals and turned the ball over three times in the red zone.

"We had our chances today, but we didn't make enough plays," said Tulane head coach Willie Fritz. "Memphis deserved to win; they played better than us in all phases of the game."

Playoff Dreams Dashed

With the loss, Tulane's hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff are over. Memphis, on the other hand, will likely move up in the rankings and earn a berth in a New Year's Six bowl game.

"We're disappointed that we didn't reach our goal of making the playoffs," said Pratt. "But we had a great season, and we'll learn from this and come back stronger next year."

Looking Ahead

Despite the disappointing end to the season, Tulane has a bright future. The Green Wave return a talented core of players, including Pratt, running back Tyjae Spears, and receiver Duece Watts. With another successful season in 2023, Tulane could once again be in contention for the College Football Playoff.
