Georgia Rallies From 17 Down, Tops Georgia Tech In 8OT
Georgia jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, but Georgia Tech responded with three touchdowns to take a 17-10 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs struggled offensively in the second half, managing just two field goals.
With the game tied 20-20 at the end of regulation, the teams entered overtime. Georgia scored a touchdown on its first possession, but Georgia Tech answered with a touchdown of its own. The teams traded field goals in the second, third, and fourth overtimes.
The fifth overtime saw Georgia score a touchdown, but Georgia Tech missed the extra point. In the sixth overtime, Georgia Tech scored a touchdown but failed to convert the two-point conversion. In the seventh overtime, Georgia again scored a touchdown, and this time converted the two-point conversion to take a 44-38 lead.
In the eighth overtime, Georgia Tech scored a touchdown to cut the lead to 44-42. However, Georgia's defense held strong, forcing a turnover on downs on Georgia Tech's two-point conversion attempt. The Bulldogs then took the ball and ran out the clock to secure the victory.
"It was an incredible game," said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. "Our guys showed a lot of heart and determination. We never gave up."
"We're obviously disappointed with the result," said Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins. "But I'm proud of our guys for the way they fought. They never gave up either."
The victory gives Georgia a 3-0 record on the season, while Georgia Tech falls to 1-2. The Bulldogs are now tied for first place in the SEC East, while Georgia Tech is in second place in the ACC Coastal.
Georgia will host South Carolina next Saturday, while Georgia Tech will travel to Boston College. Both games are set for noon ET.
