Giants Fire Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett After 26 Games
The New York Giants have fired offensive coordinator Jason Garrett after just 26 games into his tenure, the team announced on Monday.
Garrett's Record with the Giants
Garrett, who was hired by the Giants in 2020, finished with a 6-10 record as the team's offensive coordinator. The Giants offense struggled under Garrett, ranking near the bottom of the NFL in several key statistical categories, including points per game (29th), yards per game (31st), and passing yards per game (31st).
Giants' Offensive Struggles
The Giants' offense has been one of the worst in the NFL for several seasons now. In 2020, the Giants finished 31st in the NFL in points per game. In 2021, the Giants finished 29th in the NFL in points per game.
"We are not happy with the performance of our offense," Giants head coach Joe Judge said in a statement. "We have made the decision to relieve Jason Garrett of his duties as offensive coordinator. We want to thank Jason for his contributions to the Giants and wish him all the best in the future."
Potential Replacements
The Giants are expected to interview several candidates for the offensive coordinator position, including:
- Freddie Kitchens, former head coach of the Cleveland Browns
- Pat Shurmur, former head coach of the Giants and Denver Broncos
- Mike Kafka, quarterbacks coach for the Kansas City Chiefs
Outlook for the Giants
The Giants are hoping that a change at offensive coordinator will help them improve their offense and compete for a playoff berth in 2022. The Giants have a talented roster on paper, but they need to find a way to get more production from their offense.
The Giants will open the 2022 season on the road against the Tennessee Titans on September 11.
